“WE DON’T steal electricity. We’re taking it because our government has failed to deliver on its promises.”

This was said by Kliptown resident Sharon Swartz during a protest against the cutting off of illegal connections in one of the informal settlements in the area.

Yesterday’s protest was sparked by the arrival of City Power workers at about 10am. They had come to cut illegal electricity connections and remove wires running from high-mast light poles and through the informal settlement into shacks.

Kimberley - The Independent Community of Kimberley (ICOK) has called on residents to rally against illegal tuck-shop owners by littering and throwing faeces at the entrances of government buildings as well as the homes of councillors on July 2.

The ICOK on Thursday said it had requested the Public Protector to investigate fraudulent leases where bribes of goods, money and airtime was allegedly being given to a local attorney, law enforcement authorities, municipal and South African Security Agency (Sassa) officials in exchange for securing business premises for foreign nationals.

ICOK convenor, Brian Banga, discouraged the use of violence but insisted that steps had to be taken to ensure that foreign nationals conducted their businesses according to health and occupational regulations.

Statement on Last Night’s Road Blockade by Kennedy Road Residents

Last night, and again this morning, hundreds of us blocked road around the Kennedy Road shack settlement with burning tyres. There is still a heavy police presence in the settlement.

The reason for these road blockades is that Mayor James Nxumalo failed to keep his promise to meet with us. On the 25 May this year we organised a major road blockade. More than 500 people held the road. At that road blockade we handed over a memorandum of demands which included (1) that the upgrade of Kennedy Road and the provision of housing at Cornubia for everyone that that cannot be accommodated in the Kennedy Road upgrade that was negotiated with Mayor Mlaba’s administration be implemented; (2) that formal electricity be provided to the settlement and (3) that Nigel Gumede be immediately dismissed from his post.

The Khulula Housing Project was meant for them but due to corruption they were excluded from the project.. It became very difficult when Linda Masinga and Associates were tasked to forcefully remove some residents to transit camps in Richmond Farm in 2009. Everybody knows that there was a blatant corruption in this housing project. The provincial government had acknowledged this and sent its delegation to investigate this in 2009. A Task Team comprised of Abahlali delegates, eThekwini Municipal Officials and KZN provincial officials was set up. A clear promise was made that those marginalized would be housed with the current financial here. But today we are told that eThekwini Road Authority is the only unity in the city that is opposed to our housing project.

Johannesburg - More than 100 protesters were arrested for public violence and malicious damage to property in the Protea area on Wednesday, Soweto police said.

They were arrested during a service delivery protest which started in the early hours of the morning outside Randfontein, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

Impala Road towards Krugersdorp, and the N12 from Potchefstroom, were being cleared and opened to traffic.

Earlier, Makhubela described the scene as chaotic as hundreds of community members from the Waterworks informal settlement clashed with the police.

“Police are firing rubber bullets at the protesters. We also have our nyalas (armoured vehicles) and choppers on the scene, but these protesters are attacking police,” said Makhubela.

The protesters were throwing stones and rocks at police and motorists. A journalist was injured when he was hit by a stone.

Those arrested would appear soon in the Westonaria Magistrate's Court, said Makhubela.

IOL News 5 February 2014

Johannesburg - Protesting residents of Ekangala near Bronkhorstspruit, east of Pretoria, on Wednesday demanded improved service delivery in the area.

This followed the torching of various buildings, including a clinic and a house in nearby Rethabiseng.

Locals said they had been in the area since the early 1990s but nothing had been done for them.

During a community meeting, Mita Mothoa from Dark City, a section of Ekangala, said she was still using a pit toilet.

“Tshwane is not treating us right. We don't have toilets and title deeds. It's time we stood up,” she said.

Community leader Petros Molobola told the group gathered at the community hall that residents did not want to fall under the City of Tshwane.

“We never accepted Tshwane, our parents did. We are not Sputla's (mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa's) puppets,” he said.

The area used to fall under the Metsweding municipality but was merged with Tshwane in 2011.

Other residents said they wanted land to build shacks. A site was identified where residents would start building shacks.

“We are going to build them and they (municipality and police) must not remove us,” said one resident.

Before the meeting, a group calling themselves Concerned residents of Ekangala danced in the street with a banner saying “away with Tshwane, give us back our Metsweding”, and “give our title deeds, develop Metsweding, no poor service”.

Earlier in the day, police stopped residents who were marching to the main road to voice their dissatisfaction.

Mahikeng - Rubber bullets and stun grenades were used to disperse protesting residents of Setlagole, near Mahikeng, on Thursday, North West police said.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said about 400 people gathered illegally and blocked the N18 between Vryburg and Mahikeng. They began burning tyres from around 3am.

“The community allegedly barricaded the road and demanded to be given feedback by the mayor of Ratlou local municipality on issues pertaining to the memorandum they handed in on February 14,” he said.

Around 10am, police dispersed the crowd and nine women and 11 men were arrested. A number of foreign-owned shops were looted during the protest and four women and three men were arrested for possession of suspected stolen goods.

“It was also reported that an attempt was made to set alight the house of the mayor, but the police intervened and only window panes were damaged after being pelted with stones by protesters,” Ngubane said.

Those arrested would appear in court soon to face charges of public violence, possession of suspected stolen goods, business robbery and contravention of the Road Traffic Act.

“The residents were taking their anger with the municipality to the streets,” Captain Pelonomi Makau said.

The protests took place on the national road between Coligny and Ventersdorp.

This had not happened, she said.

Earlier, the residents had blocked the N14 with large rocks, and the road had to be closed. It was later re-opened.

Gauteng will be main focus of final sprint
Johannesburg - Rioting broke out in Bekkersdal township in Gauteng on the eve of the general election, one of several hotspots where the army has been deployed to keep order, police said Tuesday.

“We have received reports of disturbances in Bekkersdal where residents have blockaded roads with burning tyres,” said police spokesman Lungelo Dlamini.

“At this stage we don't know the cause of the violence,” he said adding that no injuries had been reported.

Bekkersdal township, south west of Johannesburg, has been hit by intermittent unrest since last year, as residents protest a lack of public services in the area.

Violence intensified early this year, resulting in the destruction of public buildings, with local officials accused of corruption and nepotism.

Maditloka - Sixteen people were arrested after allegedly pelting police with stones during a protest in Mmaditloka, near Marikana, on Tuesday, North West police said.

“(The protest) was about the chrome mines, people said (the mines) caused damage to their property,” Brigadier Thulane Ngubane said.

The protest did not appear to be related to the on-going platinum strike.

Those arrested would appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court.

Ngubane said he could not immediately give further details.

There have been tensions in the area recently as the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union objected to employers approaching miners with their wage offer directly in a bid to end the four-month strike in the platinum sector.

South African shantytown residents have forced the closure of a museum honouring anti-apartheid heroes, accusing the authorities of building "a house for dead people" while they live in squalor.

The modernity of the 22 million rand ($2 million) building, which won several international architectural awards, stands in total contrast to the plastic and corrugated iron structures which serve as houses for the neighbouring community.
